About Friends of the Poor
The mission of Friends of the Poor is to bring together those who have the desire to give with those who are in need of assistance, in order to ease the burden of living in poverty and enhance the quality of life for all.
Friends of the Poor was founded by Sister Adrian Barrett, IHM, in 1986 and is sponsored by the Congregation of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Friends of the Poor is a non-profit charitable organization.
In keeping with that mission and history, Friends of the Poor operates as a very unique organization. We are a non-profit, charitable organization, but we are also run entirely by volunteers. There are no paid employees so we completely rely on our great volunteers and donors.
We also have some unique programs. In our daily workings we provide for basic needs with food, clothing, emergency assistance, house hold items and furniture. In fact, we are the only agency in the county to give away furniture. But in addition to these essential programs we also like to host events that bring hope and brighten up the holidays. We serve a wide range of people from our senior holiday dinners, to our children's after school programs and field trips.
