Friends of the Poor History

The Friends of the Poor was founded in 1986 by Sister Adrian Barrett, IHM. For several years prior, Sister Adrian worked tirelessly during the summer to provide meaningful summer experiences for children. Sister Adrian was the founder of Project Hope which continues as a day camp for children.

Friends of the Poor was developed by Sister Adrian and a group of committed volunteers in response to the needs that she saw during her years of outreach to children, their parents and senior citizens. For the past 25 years, Friends of the Poor has attempted to fulfill the basic needs of individuals—food, clothing, furniture, and household items—and provide social and cultural opportunities for those who might otherwise not have them.

Since 1986, the Scranton Housing Authority has graciously provided office and pantry space enabling Friends of the Poor to offer its service in close proximity to where many people reside. Friends of the Poor relies on volunteer support and private charity to continue this important ministry.
